I have been waiting, tinkering with the idea of this trip, for 2 years. Now, I leave in 8 days. The approach to this point and how it feels now that it is so soon has been a surprise. I think it is always that way when something you imagine for so long sneaks up quietly from the far distant future to the 'this is happening right now'.
Graduating college felt that way; I imagine getting married will feel the same. And now it is time for me to hike. Or just about.
